Governance and finance

Good governance that is fit for purpose is at the heart of every successful organisation.

Good governance, expressed as a strategic plan, is focused on impact for the benefit of stakeholders. The operational plan and the risk management system deliver the outputs and outcomes required under the strategic plan. The annual budget is used to monitor financial performance month by month within the operational plan.

Non-financial indicators are as important as financial ones.

Training and development

Successful charities and social enterprises train and develop their boards of trustees and directors. Paul has a passion for working with organisations in this area for the benefit of those who they work for.

The charity and social enterprise sectors differ from the private sector in that success is collaborative rather than individual. Training and development for charities and social enterprises need to reflect and respect this collaborative nature.

My mission

Governance and finance

In Anna Karenina, Tolstoy wrote ‘All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its way’.

Paul works to apply this idea to organisations to help each one to achieve its full potential for the benefit of those who it works for.  This includes, but is not limited to, funders and investors.

Training and development

Mahatma Ghandi said, ‘You must be the change you want to see in the world.’

Training and development is key to changing the world.  My approach to training and development is collaborative, often facilitating team members to learn from each other in peer-to-peer learning.

What We've Achieved

The Text Blocks below are ideal for listing your accomplishments in a neat, elegant way.

Governance and Finance

Paul worked as Treasurer of the Development Trusts Association for twelve years, overseeing the merger with bassac (the British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres) to form the new charity Locality. He worked on the Community Right to Bid legislation, which allows communities to buy assets such as shops, community centres and pubs when these come up for sale.

He spent six years as Treasurer of the British Quakers, the national membership charity of the Quaker movement. He also worked on the creation and establishment of the trading subsidiary, Friends House Hospitality, based in Euston, London.  Friends House Hospitality is a hospitality social enterprise, which operates in accordance with Quaker principles and gifts its profit each year to British Quakers.

He was a founder non-executive director of the Social Stock Exchange, which admits social impact businesses funded by social impact investors. This Exchange is where profit meets purpose.  The Exchange has 32 members, with a collective value of £2 billion.

Training and Development

As National Charity Specialist at Mazars LLP, Paul led on charity training for the firm’s charity teams across all its offices, based in London.

He also led on training and development for the boards of Mazars charity and social enterprise clients.
